Did You Know?

Golden ratio, also known as the golden section, golden mean, or divine proportion

It's Value:

The golden ratio (symbol is the Greek letter "phi" ) is a special number approximately equal to 1.618

Interesting Fact:

Golden Ratio is an expert at not being any fraction.

Golden angle:

It is about 137.5°or about 222.5°.

What is Golden ratio?

Around 2,300 years ago, mathematicians named the irrational number as Golden Ratio. It states that
"Two objects are in golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the the two quantities."

Let's make it a bit easier to understand.

“The Golden Proportion, sometimes called the Divine Proportion, has come down to us from the beginning of creation. The harmony of this ancient proportion, built into the very structure of creation, can be unlocked with the 'key' ... 528, opening to us its marvelous beauty. Plato called it the most binding of all mathematical relations, and the key to the physics of the cosmos.”― Bonnie Gaunt

Fibonacci Series

Phi is related to the Fibonacci sequence, in which every subsequent number in the sequence is found by adding together the two preceding numbers. This sequence goes as 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, and so on. By taking the ratio of successive Fibonacci numbers, we can get closer and closer to phi.

Fractals

Inspired by the golden ratio, mathematician Edmund Harriss discovered a fractal curve that no one had drawn before. Fractals are iterative figures which display self-similarity. They are optimized in such a way that does not occur with any other number. The ratio retains the same proportion and is therefore self-similar to fractal.

Human Body
The easiest way to understand this was given by Leonardo da Vinci who found that the total height of the body and the height from the toes to the navel depression are in Golden Ratio. We can even determine the shape of a perfect face and facial symmetry. The human face creates more phi elements in its appearance when we smile.

Stock Market
In the stock market, analysts use the Golden Ratio to examine major price movement trends for a particular stock. Once a stock experiences a significant price increase or decrease, its resistance and support levels will be near to the Golden Ratio.

Photography
Thankfully, the math behind the golden ratio is not needed in order to apply it for photography. The Golden Ratio is simply a compositional tool. It is either a spiral or a grid that helps to place the subject within the frame in the best way possible.
